In hold’em, the first step is to get the game started, and for this the players put out a particular total of money. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the commonly used expression for this play. In the following step, the dealer shuffles the cards and gives out two cards face down to each player. A regular deck of fifty two playing cards is used in the deal. Then there is the first round of wagering. This round is normally known as a "pre-flop".

Following the first wagering sequence, the first card is tossed aside. This tossed aside card is referred to as the "burn card", and this is done to make sure that there is absolutely no treachery. The next three cards are then dealt face up on the table. These cards are referred to as ‘the flop’. Now follows a 2nd round of betting, after which the dealer throws away a further card and turns over one more card onto the poker table. Following this, players can utilize the sixth card to form a 5card poker hand.

A further round of betting follows, and in a good many styles of poker, here is where the bet size increases. There is an additional round of throwing away a card, and a closing deal of a card face-up on the table. This is referred to as the "river". Bettors can now employ any of the five cards on the table, or the 2 cards that they hold, to assemble a five-card poker hand.

To finish it up there is an additional round of betting. After that, all the players remaining begin to reveal their hands. This is known as the "showdown". Beyond a doubt, the bettor who holds the strongest hand is the winner. When gamblers have even hands a sharing of the winnings is used.

Hold’em is a simple game to learn, but to achieve expertise one needs a large amount of studying.
